Soft Launch of the New Site

Lots has happened since I last posted anything to this website. I moved to a new state. I've left nearly all social media. (I didn't delete my Twitter and Linkedin accounts, but check them mounthly as opposed to daily). I've left most closed cloud platforms, Dropbox, Evernote, Google, etc. Though I'm still in the process of switching away from Gmail and Github. Some things just take time.

So, what's new? I wanted to get away from Wordpress and switch this over to a static site. As a database performance guy, what better way to make a site faster than by just completely removing the database? Also, dynamic sites are so 2005. Most commenters were either spam or my wife.

Since I have completely re-organized my life around Org mode with Emacs, I wanted to make sure whatever I used would include org in my workflow. Hugo was an option, but there was something very appealing about David Thompson's Haunt static site generator which is written in Guile (an implementation of Scheme) and I've been finding myself gravitating towards Lisps and other functional programming languages, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

The problem was that I started the transition over a year ago and it turns out I like to tinker more than I like to produce things. That's always been the fun part, so though I've still been writing lots of things, I wasn't posting anything. So, I thought enough was enough, and since there is this great communtity of FOSS folks openly sharing things I reached out to Jakob Kreuze who basically wrote exactly what I was looking for.

Day 1, the new Check Your Logs Blog is really a blattant rip off, but is going to allow me to write notes in Org and quickly publish them here. (Maybe? We'll have to see how that goes) And should load fast no matter where you are or what your internet connection speed is because it's just a small static site :) And as always, no ads or tracking. Again, following Jakob's lead, I'm also sticking with the CC BY-SA 4.0 license.

So, do what you like.
